Abram Irvine McMordie
Born: 30 Dec 1796, Mercer Co., KY
Died: 13 Dec 1865, Mercer Co., KY
Married: (1) Jane Armstrong
Married: (2) Jane [Hurt or Hirt]

Abram Irvine McMordie was the one child of Francis and Nancy McMordie who remained on their old Kentucky farm.  He was born on 30 Dec 1793, and lived at home until he was thirty (Probate Record, 1334; Ison & Conover, 1969), then on Jun 1823 in Mercer County, he married Jane H. Armstrong, who was born 20 Jan 1803 (Consler, 1969; lson & Conover, 1970).  Their son Francis, born 11 May 1824, was named for his paternal grandfather (Probate Record, 1834; Consier, 1969).  Jane McMordie died in Mercer County on 27 May 1824, only 16 days after the birth of Francis.  It is almost certain she died of complications from childbirth.  On 7 May 1835, Abram married his second wife, Jane Hirt [in some instances spelled Hurt.  Their children were:

  1. Nancy McMordie
  2. William McMordie
  3. Margaret McMordie
  4. Ann Marie McMordie
  5. Abram I. McMordie Jr.
The second Jane McMordie died on 25 Dec 1846. By 1850 Abram's household consisted of his son Francis, age 26, and his daughters, Nancy, age 12 and Margaret, age 10 (Mercer Co. Census, 1850). Notably absent from the family was the 5 year old Abram Jr. More than likely he was cared for by his Aunt Mary Cowan, because, in 1860 both Mary and Abram Jr. were living in the home of a probable relative, Jon Parker (Boyle Co.Census, 1860).

Before the Civil War, Abram's farm was worth $10,000. Nancy had married Samuel C. Lackey on 25 Oct 1855, so the only children remaining at home ware 19 year old Margaret and Francis, who was 35 (Mercer Co. Census, 1860).

After the War began, Abram, Jr. and Francis enlisted in Company I, 7th Kentucky Calvary, CSA (Report of the Adjutant General, 1915.). Francis was captured and then exchanged in 1864. He died soon after he was released (Consier, 1969; Boyd, 1908). Abram Jr. apparently survived the war without being wounded. There is an Abe McMordie that was captured, died and buried in the prison camp at Point Lookout, Maryland.

Abram Irvine McMordie died on December 13, 1865, having survived two wives and three children. His older son died unmarried, and the younger son had not married as yet. Then, the following year, on 23 Oct 1866, Abram McMordie Jr. married Nannie Harris (Cook, 1987). By 1870 Abram and Nannie were living in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, where he was working as a grocery clerk. In their household were Ann Measly, a 23-year-old black domestic servant and Ann's six-year-old daughter, Nanny. Almost certainly Ann Measly was a former slave of Nannie McMordie (Mercer Co. Census, 1870). According to the 1900 Census of Mercer County, Abe and Nannie were still living in Harrodsburg where he was a liveryman. At this time they had been married for 33 years but were childless. They died within six weeks of each other in 1904 and were buried in the Springhill Cemetery in Harrodsburg (Cemetery Records, Mercer Co., 1970). Their gravestones read:

  1. MacMordie, Abraham
  2. MacMordie, Nannie T
